Use edible items to make a waterfall on a cake.
Fanciful waterfall cakes do not have to come from a bakery or require the skills of a professional. With a touch of creativity and some time, your own cake can look like it came from a bakery. Fondant, fruit leather, flowers or icing can all be used to give your cake the illusion of a tumbling torrent of water while keeping your cake entirely edible. Does this Spark an idea?
Fondant Falls
Fondant is an edible cake decoration that can be molded like clay for a smoother, more finished look than buttercream icing. Start with purchased fondant and knead blue cake coloring into the batch. Roll and cut it to the desired size. Attach the fondant to the cake with buttercream icing. Smooth the fondant waterfall with your hands, and use a toothpick to create ripple lines. Add a sprinkling of silver luster dust for shine.
Fruit Leather
Blue fruit leather is easier to work with than fondant. You do not need to roll or color it. Look for extra long, narrow strips of fruit leather with the fruit snacks at grocery stores. Cut the fruit leather to the desired dimensions and attach it to the cake with buttercream icing. Use large pieces of fruit leather on the cake to form a cake where the waterfall originates, if desired.
Flowing Flowers
Purchase or make by hand a large assortment of blue flowers from marizpan (sweetened almond paste) or gum paste or use edible flowers such as violets. Arrange the flowers on a tiered cake in a long line from the top of the cake to the bottom. The finished look resembles a waterfall of flowers. Try this romantic waterfall technique for a wedding cake or one to celebrate a couple's anniversary. Look for pre-made natural or artificial, edible flowers at cake decorating supply stores or craft stores selling baking materials.
Icing
Making the waterfall from buttercream and gel icings is the simplest technique to use. It includes items more likely to be had on hand by a casual baker. Use food coloring to dye white buttercream cake icing. Purchase blue decorator cake gel. Draw the outline of the waterfall on the cake with the gel icing and fill in the space by spreading a layer of buttercream icing. Use white or blue gel icing to create water accents on the waterfall. Both buttercream and gel decorator icings are available in the baking section of supermarkets or grocery stores.
