Games To Play At A Luau Birthday Party

Bring Hawaii to your backyard with a luau birthday party.

The history of the Hawaiian luau began in the 1800s, when the Hawaiian king famously ate with the commoners in a party setting. You can create your own Hawaiian luau for a birthday bash by coming up with the right decorations, ambiance and food. But without the games, your luau could end up turning into a dud.

Tacky Tourist Relay

Hawaii brings many tourists to its shores. To mock the stereotypical fashions of Hawaii tourists, gather two sets of common tourist clothing items. Examples include a straw hat, lei, flower-print shirt, flip flops and sunglasses. Divide the group into two teams and place each set of clothing next to each team's line. On the count of three, the first player on each team has to put on all of the clothing items, take them off and hand them to the next player in line. This process continues down the line until all of the members of one team---the winning team---has put on and taken off the pieces of clothing before the other group.

Surfing the Waves

For this game, you need a regular-sized surfboard. Put the surfboard flat on the ground and have one player stand on the board. The rest of the players surround the surfboard and place their hands beneath it. When you say "Go," the players have to rock the board to and fro to get the player standing on it to fall off. Time each player's performance to see who gets the best time. Whoever stands on the board the longest wins the game.

Hula Hoop Islands

Gather as many hula hoops as there are party guests, minus one. Place the hula hoops next to each other on the ground so that you create a circle. Gather the players around the section of hula hoop islands. Once you turn on some Hawaiian music, the players all walk around the islands. As soon as you turn the music off, all of the players have to try and hop into an island to save themselves from elimination. Only one player can occupy an island at a time. The person who did not find a hula hoop gets disqualified from the game. Take away a hula hoop after each round, and continue until only one person remains, having hopped into the last hula hoop.
