Children'S Party Food Ideas

Let children decorate their own ice cream sundae at the party.

Planning a party for children can be a fun time to get creative with decorations and interactive party food. One early decision you will need to make is to decide what menu options are best based on the time of day that the event will occur. For example, a heavier meal-like menu is ideal if the party is at lunch or dinner time. Another tip is to avoid serving anything containing peanuts or peanut by-products as many children have severe allergies to peanuts. This includes food products fried in peanut oil. Does this Spark an idea?

Build Your Own Pizza

Using English muffin halves as your pizza base and spaghetti sauce, let the children make and decorate their own pizza. This is a great idea for both the hosts and children, as the children will have a great time making their cute, individual pizzas while saving you time taking orders and making custom pizzas. When selecting toppings, remember to keep it kid-friendly with plenty of cheeses, sausage and pepperoni and few vegetables, such as bell pepper, onion and mushrooms. If you have a large number of children attending the party, you can use (or borrow from friends) several toaster ovens to use in addition to your oven to cook the mini-pizzas.

Decorate Your Own Sugar Cookie

Instead of serving traditional birthday cake at the party, your guests can have fun making their own sweet treat. To get started, make several large batches of sugar cookies the day before the party. You may also want to make several colors of icing at the same time that you store in clear, plastic sandwich bags. For example, if you make blue icing divide it into numerous bags, as these will become the icing tools the children use to decorate cookies. Use a round cookie cutter or select one that corresponds to your party's theme, such as a shell or star (for a starfish) for a beach-themed swim party. When it is time to decorate the cookies, cut off just the tip of one corner of the bag so that the children can squeeze out the icing. You may want to decorate some examples to help the children get their creative juices flowing before they start on their own. And if you make plenty of extras so that each child can decorate several cookies, they make an exciting party favor.

Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundae

All children love ice cream, so you will thrill them all when you announce that they will get to decorate their own ice cream sundae. Purchase the ice cream basics of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate along with a wide selection of toppings such as fresh fruit, colored and chocolate sprinkles, crushed peppermint patties and other candy bar favorites, chocolate and caramel sauce, and whipped cream. One critical tip is to avoid all products containing nuts as they often contain peanuts or peanut by-products.
