Camping Site Setup Ideas

Musical instruments can add quiet enjoyment to camping.

Camping is an inexpensive and healthy way to enjoy nature, close to home or on vacation. Even on a business trip, you can find campgrounds with Wi-Fi hookups that allow you to stay in touch with your office and schedule appointments right from your camping site. Learn to set up your site for efficiency, comfort and safety as well as fun.

Location, Location, Location

Your campsite's proximity is everything, both in scenery and safety. Set up where you will be able to see the sun rise, if possible. You can see the sun set anywhere. Keep your distance from other campers but don't go so far into the wilderness that no one knows where you are or would hear you if you called for help. If you need to use the campground's restrooms, try to locate your campsite within an easy walk or at least a path that you could find in the dark, with only a flashlight.

Nuts and Bolts

Know work your camping equipment. If you're tenting, practice setting up your tent in the backyard enough times so that you can literally do it in the dark. You may have to, unexpectedly. If you are camping in a pop-up or an RV, you must know hook up to water, electricity and sewage without a glitch.

Prepare in Advance

Check to see how far your campground will be from the nearest food store, propane source or emergency aid. Bring enough food, water and fuel, but also decorate your campsite with some touches of home: a string of festive lights, fire-starter logs in case you can have a campfire. Make coffee or cocoa over the fire and see how good it tastes in tin mugs.

Whatever the Weather

Even if you're tent-camping, your night does not have to be ruined by rain or wind. Just take the time to waterproof all tent seams and make sure that you have long enough stakes to keep any increase in wind overnight from blowing your tent over. Set up your campsite as if you're expecting a thunderstorm. Be prepared for hail as well as rain and wind.
