Fun Activities To Do At A Luau Party

Lei making is a fun activity for all ages.

Plan your Hawaiian luau party by creating a fun and tropical theme with activities for all ages. Planning traditional luau activities brings laughter to the party and creates a social atmosphere for the guests to interact with each other. Save money by using items from the activities to decorate the party area and bring the party theme together.

Hula Dancing

Hula dancing is a classic Luau activity that is open for all guests to participate. Purchase Hawaiian luau music and pull the theme together by decorating a small area with leis, flip-flops and grass skirts. Create a work area where each guest can make his or her own grass skirt out of a large roll of brown paper or plastic table coverings. Another option is to purchase low cost grass skirts and give one to each guest performing in the luau. Let each guest dance with no rules since the fun part is watching.

Flower Leis

Create a lei making activity using real or silk flowers to get each guest into the spirit of the party. Real flowers that work well for leis are roses, daisies, carnations or plumeria blossoms. Silk flowers also work well and are lower in cost. Purchase seashells with holes from jewelry supply stores and alternate the shells and flowers to add creativity to the leis. Use dental floss or an upholstery thread and a large sewing or darning needle to string the flowers since it does not break easily. Provide adult supervision to children working with a sharp needle.

Coconut bowling or races

Organize fun coconut bowling or coconut racing activities at the party. Coconuts do not roll straight which makes the games even more enjoyable. Coconut bowling involves setting up bowling pins or plastic bottles filled with sand and rolling a whole coconut as the bowling ball. Allow children to start closer to the pins than adults to make it fair and fun for everyone. Coconut races involve rolling a whole coconut through a series of obstacles with a broom. The participants cannot kick or touch the coconut during the race. Set the racecourse on a flat, smooth surface so the coconut rolls erratically during the race.

Rolling Stones

Rolling stones is a traditional Hawaiian activity similar to the game of horseshoes. The activity involves inserting a small stick to the ground. Each player tosses stones towards the stick with the closest stone winning the game. You can set up the number of tosses allowed bases on the number of players. Set up a stone painting center and let each guest custom paint their stones prior to playing the game. Use a water-based paint that dries quickly in the sun to speed the time between painting and completing the activity.
