6th Birthday Party Ideas

Turning six is a big deal for your child and should be celebrated with a party.

Having a sixth birthday party can be a blast for your 6-year-old, but it can mean a lot of stress and work for you. Before you get started, make sure you have the guest list right. It can be very painful for one child in a group of friends to be left out. Start to focus on coming up with the perfect theme for your child's party. She will probably have many ideas of her own; if not, a few creative twists on traditional themes can help get your party started. Does this Spark an idea?

Games Party

A party focused on games will keep children occupied for hours. You can have traditional party games like musical chairs or a three-legged race. One game that entertains children is Pass the Present, where you wrap a prize in many layers of wrapping paper, and the children pass it around in a circle, each removing one layer of paper until there's no more. The child who unwraps the last layer wins. Board games are a great choice, as well, including CandyLand, Twister, and other age-appropriate games. You can have different "stations" for each game; just make sure that each station has appropriate adult supervision.

Alice in Wonderland Party

Alice in Wonderland -- or really, any Disney movie -- makes a great theme for a 6-year-old's birthday party. You can provide materials for children to dress up as their favorite characters from the film: Alice herself, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat. Serve cupcakes instead of birthday cake, with "Eat Me" written on them in frosting; fruit punch can come in cups that say "Drink Me." If you have room in your house or backyard, you can conduct an Alice in Wonderland scavenger hunt, where you hide important objects featured in the book or movie, and children search for them in pairs or teams. For favors, copies of Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland are a great choice, as are copies of the Disney DVD.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Party

Another movie-themed party, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a much-beloved film for both boys and girls and thus makes a great choice for a 6-year-old's birthday party. The theme is chocolate everything -- chocolate cake, chocolates in the goody bags, a screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You can have children go on a hunt for "Golden Tickets" around the house and backyard.
