Decorating For A Luau Party

Send your guests to Hawaii without stepping on a plane.

Transform your party atmosphere into the "Islands of Aloha." With the right decor, you can transport your guests to a Hawaiian festival. Have a little bit of local flavor in every detail and your luau will be a colorful and memorable event. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

Begin with your color palette. Choose colors to correspond with your luau theme. Look for shades that reflect the islands. Blue is the color of the sky and ocean. Green comes from the lush tropical greenery. Pale brown represents bamboo and coconuts. Bright tropical colors are inspired by Hawaiian flowers, such as hibiscus, plumeria, and orchid.

Encourage your guests to wear costumes. Guests who dress up add to the overall atmosphere. Encourage guests to come in grass skirts or Hawaiian tourist clothing. Add some authentic "Aloha" by placing leis on your guests as they arrive and play Hawaiian music for ambience.

Food is also a major factor to the overall character of a luau. Serve tropical fruit, such as coconuts and pineapples. A full roasted pig can double as the main course as well as your decorative centerpiece. Have tropical beverages, such as mai tais.

If your party is indoors, place fake palm trees at the entrance. Wrap white Christmas lights around banisters or trees for a festive effect. Display a personalized luau banner to welcome guests.

Picturesque backdrops are a dramatic way to transform the look and feel of your party. For instant impact, use scene setters, which are large expansive pictures, also known as floor-to-ceiling murals. For a more affordable and creative alternative, draw your own Hawaiian scene on butcher paper. Include life-size cutouts of hula dancers. Use a giant lei or a luau flower garland to decorate tables, doorways, decks or banisters. Add tropical print tablecloths or plain white linen cloths. Your centerpiece can include tropical flowers in a vase or bamboo thatched box. Place seashells and dried starfish throughout the party. Find island-inspired tableware, such as wooden bowls or leaf-shaped plates. Serve drinks in coconut cups.

If your event is outdoors, decorate with tiki torches and tribal masks. Candles or paper lanterns are other ways to heighten the atmosphere. If you don't have a pool, fill a blue mini pool to represent the ocean.
