Advantages Of Autocratic Leadership

The leader calls the shots in an autocratic system.


While in many situations input from others is desired, under the autocratic leadership model, the thoughts and ideas of those not in authority are not desired. In situations of autocratic, or top-down, leadership, the individual in charge dictates what course of action should be taken and provides directives to those under him without regard for their opinions. Although there are negatives to this type of leadership, there are situations in which such leadership can be advantageous.


Workforce Control


In situations of autocratic leadership, the leader has complete and total control over his workers. This total control can allow the leader to more easily change directions or modify plans as well as reduce the likelihood that those under him will deviate from his directives.


Unskilled Workforce Management


While information sharing can be beneficial in small groups of people educated in the field, many find this type of back and forth communication too cumbersome in larger settings or when dealing with individuals who have no training in the field. By adopting an autocratic leadership method, leaders can avoid receiving input from workers who are unqualified to give advice, thereby cutting down on confusion regarding which course to take.


Clear Behavioral Guidelines


In an autocratic leadership situation, the norms of behavior are clearly laid out. Generally, in these situations behavioral guidelines are cut-and-dried. This makes it easier for workers to determine which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. The more clear behavioral directives are, the easier it is to punish individuals who do not abide by them as these rule breakers are less likely to use confusion as to the acceptability of the behavior as an excuse.


Rapid Work Completion


When only one voice is giving orders, and discussion is not allowed, work can be completed more quickly. Because individuals under autocratic leadership do not have a voice in the decision-making process, discussion time is not necessary. By cutting out time-intensive steps, leaders can increase efficiency and be more effective in getting work done rapidly.
