You want to make a really special birthday celebration for your child, but the budget doesn't allow for an expensive bakery cake. It's easy enough to bake a cake at home, but you need some ideas on decorate it so your child will feel exceptionally happy with it. With these easy to make cake ideas for kids, your worries are over. Does this Spark an idea?
Cookie Cake
Make a batch of sugar cookies before you start the cake. Use stars, moons and hearts with cookie cutters. Bake the cookies and then ice them with pastel-colored royal icing (it hardens). Make a traditional round, two-layer cake with white or pink icing. Stick the cookies around the side of the cake, onto the icing. Sprinkle the top of the cake with flaked coconut.
Make another version, of the cookie cake, with chocolate icing and cookies made with cookie cutters of airplanes, trucks, trains, dinosaurs or any thing the birthday boy might be into at the moment. Use candy colored sprinkles for the top of the cake.
Cupcakes
Cupcakes are making a resurgence in popularity, although they have never gone out of style for kids. Ice cupcakes in flower colors. Use flat circle candies (see resources), halved, to stick into the icing all the way around the cupcake, just above the top of the cup cake paper. Use mini chocolate chips sprinkled for the center of the flower.
Make cupcakes with white icing and decorate the tops like baseball with a red tube of decorative icing (found in the grocery baking section). Make orange icing for basketballs with black decorative icing. These are perfect for a baseball or sports- themed party.
Just for Fun
Even a plain cake, with a picture of your child on the top, will impress everyone. Icing sheets are used, printed with a special edible ink (see resources). Unfortunately, the machines used to print out these sheets can be expensive, especially when you are trying to stay on a budget. Instead, call your local bakery to see if they offer this service. Have them print the sheet out for you, using your photo. You can also order them online (see resources). The photo icing sheet is made of edible frosting. You simply peel it off of a paper sheet and place it directly on the cake.
Shaped pans make it easy to create a special cake for your child. Purchase one and encourage your friends and family to do the same for their children. After you make the cake, trade pans with one of them for next year's cake. The pans come in shapes, such as Tinkerbell, Elmo, Spider-Man, monkey, duck, the number one, star, car, butterfly and many more (see resources).
Make your child's favorite cake and icing. Sprinkle her favorite candy over the top, such as M&Ms, jelly beans, Junior Mints, malt balls or small chunks of Snickers.
