Famous Colleges In Georgia

Georgia is home to several famous colleges.

Georgia is home to dozens of two- and four-year colleges. Although each college in Georgia is unique, a few of them are famous, having widespread notoriety for things like sports or a rich history. The most famous colleges are located in the northern part of the state.

The University of Georgia

The Athens, Georgia school is likely the most notable for its football program. The Georgia Bulldog football team is part of the Southeastern Conference, often playing against other notable football teams like the University of South Carolina and the University of Florida. The team mascot, Uga, an English bulldog, is a fan favorite. The University of Georgia, or UGA, as many call it, also has popular basketball and gymnastic programs, often competing for the top spots in national competitions.

Morehouse College

Atlanta's Morehouse College is most famous among the African American community. The school is a private historically black liberal arts college for men and located in downtown Atlanta. It was founded in 1867 and originally located in Augusta, Georgia at Springfield Baptist Church, the oldest black church in the nation. It has educated men like Martin Luther King Jr. and Spike Lee. The college also is home to the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. Spelman College is a historically black liberal arts college for women in Atlanta.

Georgia College & State University

Milledgeville's Georgia College & State University was chartered in 1889 and originally served only women as students. After changing names several times, it now serves all students seeking a liberal arts education at a public institution. The school became even more famous outside of Georgia in early 2010, when a student accused Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of sexual assault in a nearby bar.

Savannah College of Art and Design

Among artists, the Savannah College of Art and Design in the historic southern city is a popular choice. SCAD, as many students call the school, offers program in design, fashion, digital media and performing arts, among others. Aside from its main campus in Savannah, it also has facilities in Atlanta and Hong Kong and a study abroad location in Lacoste, France. The school originally was founded in 1978.
