Envelope Etiquette For Graduation Announcements

Graduation announcement envelopes are addressed with formal wording.

How you address and layout the envelopes for a graduation announcement will correspond to the invitations themselves. Addressing the envelope correctly and with proper etiquette will showcase your planning and attention to detail for the recipients. Graduation announcements will typically be sent to friends and family members of the graduate and his parents.

Writing

Graduation announcements are typically formal correspondence. Etiquette dictates that the envelopes, from the addressee information to the return address, should be hand written. Printing labels or printing directly onto the envelope gives the envelopes a business feel, not appropriate for a graduation announcement. Taking the time to hand write each invitation will make the envelopes more formal and showcase the care that went into them.

Addressee

Write out the full names of those included on the envelope, as you would for a wedding invitation letter. For example, write the formal name of the couple or individual as "Mr. and Mrs. James Jensen." For a woman, use the titles of "Miss," "Ms." or "Mrs." depending on her marital status. When in doubt, use the "Ms." title. If the announcement is doubling as an invitation to the graduation ceremony only write the names of those in the household who are invited on the envelope.

Formatting

Since the announcement is formal and traditional, do not include any abbreviations when writing out the address of the recipient. For example, the words "street," "road" and "township," must be written in long form on the envelope. You do not, however, necessarily have to write out any numerals expressed in the address, such as the house number. These can be presented in numeral form.

Order

The order in which you write the address is also specified by formality and etiquette. Include the names of the people you are writing to on the first line of the envelope address. On the second line of the envelope include the street address and an apartment number, if applicable. On the last line, write the name of the city and state the envelope is being sent to, followed by the zip code.
