Easy And Cheap Birthday Centerpiece Ideas

Place your flower cake on a cake stand to make it highly visible.

Birthday centerpieces can be beautiful without being expensive or difficult to make. Birthday cakes can become charmingly unique centerpieces with the addition of edible flowers. Jack-o-lanterns are unexpected outside of Halloween, which adds to their fun as centerpieces. Candles turn into beautiful centerpieces with a little arts and crafts work, and photo collage centerpieces can be personalized with notes from party-goers.

Birthday Cake with Edible Flowers

Squash blossoms are fully edible.

A simple birthday cake decorated with edible flowers is an easy and cost-effective centerpiece that avoids complicated icing and expensive decorations. Edible flowers can be picked from local gardens or purchased from florists. If you pick your flowers, confirm their identification with a flower guide before eating. If you buy from a florist, make sure the flowers haven't been sprayed with any chemicals. Edible flowers include squash blossoms, honeysuckle, snapdragons and pansies.

Wash the flowers and remove the green stems. Decorate the cake with a solid icing, then drape the cake with individual flowers, mini-bouquets or petal designs. If you're feeling inspired, place clover at the base of the cake to create a lush appearance. Be sure not to eat too many flowers at once, as they can cause indigestion if you're unused to eating them.

Birthday Jack-o-Lantern

You can carve the pumpkin in artistic, abstract designs.

Jack-o-Lanterns are a traditional spooky Halloween sight, which makes their appearance at a non-Halloween birthday party that much more unexpected and amusing. Begin carving your pumpkin as you normally would a Halloween jack-o-jantern, but instead of a standard spooky face, carve the birthday boy's age. For a regular birthday, try painting the outside of the pumpkin with liquid glue and coating it with glitter. If the birthday is a 40th or "Over the Hill," drape the pumpkin in black.

Decorated Candles

Put decorative items around the base of the candles.

Making a centerpiece of decorated candles is easy and cheap; you need only a few craft supplies. Buy solid candles at your local craft store along with charms, fake jewels and beads. Attach the colorful trinkets you picked out to the candle with craft pins or by melting the candle's wax slightly and pushing the item into the soft wax. Place your candles on a decorative platter in the center of the table.

Photo Collage

Supply colorful pens for people to write on the collage.

A photo collage of the birthday girl is a fun and cost-effective centerpiece that will give guests something to talk about. Attach favorite photos to a piece of propped-up cardboard backing. Use rubber cement to paste the photos, as liquid glue can bend photographs as it dries. Choose funny photos from her life that illustrate who she is. Leave markers by the centerpiece for guests to sign their name or write comments and birthday wishes by the pictures.
