Duck Themes For A First Birthday Party

Your child's first birthday is just one of many milestones you will encounter over the years. Although your child will not remember it, a family party is a way to celebrate the event. Choosing a theme, such as a duck theme, helps you focus your party planning. Ducks are a good choice for a first birthday because duck-themed accessories are easily available and are readily recognized by young children. Does this Spark an idea?

Rubber Ducks

Rubber ducks are a toy that many young children play with in the bathtub. Because they are readily available and easily recognizable, rubber ducks can be turned into a theme for a birthday party. Use yellow card stock and a cookie cutter to create the invitations. Place small toy rubber ducks on tables, in a punch bowl of a blue fruit drink or in a child's wading pool to decorate the party venue. For the cake, purchase a duck-shaped cake pan and make a three-dimensional cake. Use yellow and orange frosting to decorate the rubber duck-themed cake.

Farmhouse Ducks

If you want to use a more realistic theme, use the traditional white duck found on farms as your inspiration. When mailing invitations, add some white feathers to the envelope. You can often find white feathers at your local craft store. Decorations can be focused around the white ducks themselves or around a farm theme in general. Feature hay bales around the party venue to make it feel like a farm. Hang poster board cutouts of white farmhouse ducks on the walls or from the ceiling. If you have access to stuffed toy ducks, place them around the food table as an extra touch. Alternately, host your party at a local petting zoo and set up a table near the ducks. When it comes to the cake, consider making a sheet cake and frosting it to look like a pond. Place small white plastic toy ducks on the cake.

Cartoon Ducks

Use one of many cartoon ducks in popular culture as your inspiration. Disney's Donald Duck or Daisy Duck, and Warner Bros.' Looney Toon's Daffy Duck are popular feathered cartoon stars. For the invitations, either purchase pre-made invitations featuring the characters on them or make your own with familiar duck phrases, such as "Sufferin' succotash, someone's got a birthday!" Look for decorations with these characters on them, such as Mylar balloons, plates and napkins. For the cake, carve it into the shape of your chosen cartoon duck and then frost it appropriately. For example, for a Daffy Duck cake, you would frost him black with a white ring around the neck and an orange beak.
