Finger Foods For A Shower

Finger food is the key to a good baby or bridal shower.

The food you feed your guests will make or break your baby or bridal shower. The best bet is to feed guests finger food so that they can play games and talk as they eat. This will ensure that the focus stays on the guest of honor. Consider the fact that certain smells may make the mother-to-be nauseous. Most importantly, ask the bride- or mother-to-be about foods they are craving and want to have served at the shower.

Fruit

Empty then carve a watermelon into the shape of a baby carriage for a baby shower or a flower basket for a bridal shower. Fill the watermelon with pieces of cantaloupe, watermelon and honeydew in the shape of flowers, hearts and stars. Add color and shape by putting grapes and pitted cherries in the watermelon. Place several skewers by the fruit centerpiece so that each guest can make their own fruit kabob.

Vegetable

Cherry tomatoes stuffed with mozzarella cheese and a sliver of smoked salmon and topped with olive oil and sea salt are suitable for a baby or bridal shower. Or try hollowing out cucumbers and filling them with roasted chicken salad. Cut the cucumber into slices for a refreshing, simple treat. Make a fancy finger food by adding lobster salad to endive for a light meal or appetizer. Just roll it up and eat it.

Sandwiches

Make tea sandwiches by putting hummus and red pepper, or turkey, apple and cheddar cheese, on pumpernickel bread before slicing it into strips. Tantalize your guests with egg- and tuna-salad-filled breadsticks. Or make traditional sloppy Joes or barbecued beef sandwiches by using mini-sized buns.

Platters

A simple way to make all guests happy is to offer platters of meat and cheese. Purchase beef, turkey, chicken and pork in flavors such as bourbon, buffalo and pepper from your local deli. Set out a traditional platter that pairs ham, turkey, salami and roast beef with Swiss, cheddar and pepperjack cheeses. Then place a platter of flavored meats with provolone, garlic Monterey and blue cheese next to it.

Dessert

Complete your table by filling a large pedestal plate with a variety of desserts. Fill the bottom tier with mini cupcakes, such as banana cake topped with whipped cream, chocolate cake filled with raspberry jam and topped with chocolate frosting, and a single raspberry and traditional white cake with butter cream frosting. On the next tier place German chocolate and walnut brownies. The next tier could contain butterscotch-chip, sugar, oatmeal-cranberry and snicker-doodle cookies. Top the pedestal with orange-cream-filled cream puffs.
