Easy Hawaiian Crafts

Bring Hawaiian islands to life at home with easy craft projects.

Evoke the spirits of the Hawaiian tiki gods at your next party, or decorate your space with an island flair by creating simple craft projects. Hawaii an island known for its color and beauty. Reflect the feel of the islands without purchasing plane tickets or sun tan lotion.

Hair Flowers

Hair flowers are popular among female natives and tourists on Hawaiian islands. You can easily make the flowers with a few simple steps. Purchase imitation silk flowers and bulk hair clips at any hobby store or craft specialty store. Have a hot glue gun and glue sticks on hand. To efficiently make the flowers, simply use the hot glue gun to glue the flowers to the clips. Wear the flowers in your hair for a festive island touch.

Grass Skirts

Recreate the traditional Hawaiian grass skirt by purchasing raffia ribbon. Buy it in green if you can, and choose long lengths typically designed for tropical table skirts for tables. You also need rope long enough to wrap around a waist. Simply tie the long raffia ribbons to the rope, making it the length you need for your size. Use plenty of raffia to avoid gaps in the skirt. Make sure to leave 6 inches of rope uncovered by raffia to tie it together.

Leis

Use a sewing needle to thread flowers onto dental floss or thick fishing line to make a traditional Hawaiian lei. Fresh colorful hibiscus flowers make an authentic lei, but you can use imitation flowers. Simply thread the flowers into a necklace by weaving the sewing needle through the middle of one flower at a time. Store leis made with fresh flowers in air-tight plastic bags in the refrigerator to help preserve freshness and quality. You can buy fresh flowers in bulk at most florists.
