Do It Yourself Birthday Invitation Ideas

There are several tips that can add creativity to designing and creating your own invitations.

Creating your own personalized, do-it-yourself birthday-party invitations will not only save money, it will allow you total control over the color, style and message you send to your invitees. Making your own invitations, however, need not be a laborious undertaking, and there are several tips that can ease the process while adding creative flair to a DIY invitation.

Rubber Stamps

Rubber stamps can add an interesting touch to an invitation, and most craft-supply stores carry a variety of rubber stamps featuring different patterns, images and fonts. While old-style wood-mounted stamps can still be found, these have been augmented in recent years by clear, cling-mount stamps, made from a transparent rubber that can be mounted on a clear acrylic block. Because they can be easily mounted and removed repeatedly, it's easy to use different stamps, and their transparency allows the ability to see exactly where they'll be stamped on the paper and ensure the ink is spread evenly.

Creative Card Stock

The recent popularity of scrapbooking has led many craft and stationery stores to carry a wide array of different card stocks that are perfectly suited for birthday invitations, with many different colors textures, and weights from which to choose --- even metallic and opalescent finishes. Another option is to look for blank pocket-fold invitations, a unique card stock base that folds into itself to become both the invitation and envelope in one.

Printable Invitations

For the computer-savvy, there is also software to help produce invitations that can be customized and then printed. One such program is Paint.net, a Windows-based image- and photo-editing software that is free to download and can be used to make a printable birthday invitation. You can upload your own photos or use clip art of stock images to create a one-of-a-kind invitation. For an extra touch of class, print it on glossy photo paper.

Embellisments

Once the invitations have been designed and printed, a final touch can be the addition of embellishments to add a decorative flair. These can include such things as glitter, beads, stickers or even crystals, all of which can be attached to the invitation with a craft-making glue gun. For something extra-special, use Swarovski crystal beads, which have a diamond-like sparkle and are available in an array of different colors.
