Cupcake Decorating Ideas Sharks

Model the cupcake toppers after real sharks.

Shark cupcakes give the guests something to sink their teeth into. Cupcakes work well for birthday parties because the guests can serve themselves. They are also easy to bake and decorate even if you don't have a lot of cake decorating experience. Whether the party's theme is actually sharks or is something related, such as ocean animals or beaches, the shark cupcakes fit right in with the decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Plastic Sharks

Plastic shark toys make a simple cupcake decorating option to fit the theme. Look for packages of small plastic animals at dollar stores or toy stores. Rinse the shark toys to remove any debris that might be on them. Ice the cupcakes with blue icing to resemble water. Press one plastic shark toy into the icing on top of each cupcake. Each guest gets to go home with a little plastic shark toy as a favor.

Shark Fin

Another option is to make the cupcakes look like the ocean with a shark fin sticking out of the water. Fondant works well for creating the fins. Fondant is found at craft stores in the cake decorating section. You can also make your own fondant if you prefer. Purchase black or gray fondant, or tint it yourself by adding black food coloring and kneading it. Divide the fondant into small pieces and mold each piece into a shark fin shape. You can also roll out the fondant and use a fondant cutter to create the shark fins. Let them dry for a few days so they hold their shape. Decorate the cupcakes with blue icing to resemble water. Don't worry about smoothing it. A rough finish on the frosting will make it resemble waves. Press a fin into each cupcake so it stands up on top.

Shark Tooth

A shark tooth is a different option for decorating shark-themed cupcakes. Fondant also works well for this cupcake decoration. Not only is it easy to work with, it is also edible so it is a safe decoration option for your guests. Use white fondant and mold it into the shape of a shark's tooth. You can ice the cupcakes in any color you want. Place the shark tooth on top of the icing to complete the cupcake design.

Gummy Sharks

Another edible topper option is to use gummy sharks. This option is easier than some of the other decorating options because you don't have to mold anything. Look for the gummy sharks in the candy section or at specialty candy stores. Cover the cupcakes in a layer of blue frosting to resemble water. You can add a little white frosting in spots to create white-cap waves. Press the gummy sharks into the blue icing. If the sharks are small enough, place two or three on each cupcake.
